• Jhaverchand Meghani (28 August 1896 – 9 March 1947):
He was a noted poet, writer, social reformer and freedom fighter from Gujarat. He was born in Chotila. Mahatma Gandhi spontaneously gave him the title of Raashtreeya Shaayar (National Poet). Besides this he received many awards like Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and Mahida Paaritoshik in literature. He authored more than 100 books. He was inspired by poems of Kavi Kalapi, Baul Sangeet and Rabindranath Tagore’s poems. His first book was a translation work of Rabindranath Tagore’s ballad, ‘Kathaa-o-Kaahinee’ titled ‘Kurbani Ni Kathao’ (Stories of martyrdom) which was first published in 1922. He contributed widely to Gujarati folk literature. He went from village to village in search of folk-lores and published them in various volumes of ‘Saurashtra Ni Rasdhar’ (1923-29). Some of his famous works are ‘Veni Na Phool’-1927, ‘Killol’-1930, ‘Sindhudo’-1930, ‘Kasumbi no Rang’, ‘Ravindra Veena’-1944, ‘Mansai na Diva’-1945 and many others.
• Akha Bhagat (approx. 1591-1656):
Akha Bhagat, commonly known as Akho or Akha Rahiyadas Soni was a medieval Gujarati poet who wrote in the tradition of the Bhakti movement. He wrote his poems in a literary form called Chhappa (six stanza satirical poems).
He is regarded as the most important poet of medieval Gujarati literature. Three of his works are dated including ‘Panchikarana’ (1645; Mixture of five elements), ‘Gurushishyasamvada’ (1645; A Dialogue between Teacher and a Pupil) and ‘Akhe-gita’, among which, Akhe-gita is considered as an important work. Umashankar Jethalal Joshi (pronunciation) (21 July 1911 – 19 December 1988) was an Indian poet, scholar and writer known for his contributions to Gujarati literature. He wrote most of his works in Gujarati.
Biography
Early years
Umashankar Joshi was born to Jethalal Kamalji and Navalbai in a small village named Bamna (now in Bhiloda Taluka of Aravalli district, Gujarat). He had eight siblings including six brothers and two sisters.
Umashankar Joshi's father, Jethalal who worked as a Karbhari of several Jagirs, wanted his sons to get an English education. In 1916, Joshi started his education at Primary school in Bamna and spent two years in 4th standard due to the absence of the teacher for a long time. Upon learning this Jethalal joined Joshi in Sir Pratap High School of Idar. As a boy who was raised in an orthodox environment, Joshi always heard "highly sensitive and expressive language" which shaped his future style, especially in writing plays. As a child, he had excursions to hilly areas of Aravalli and visits to colorful monsoon fairs in and around Bamna. This village life left a profound impact on his language and developed "lyrical vein" in him.
In Sir Pratap High School, Idar, Joshi continued his studies until 1927 for 6 years. He joined Proprietary High School in Ahmedabad for his matriculation in 1927. It is traced back to 11th century. Many good poets and writers have served Gujarati literature in last 7 centuries. To mention some: Acharya Hemachandraઆચાર્ય હેમચંદ્ર Acharya Hemachandra (1089–1172) was a Jain scholar, poet, and polymath who wrote on grammar, philosophy, prosody and contemporary history. Noted as a prodigy by his contemporaries, he gained the title Kalikāl Sarvagya "all-knowing of the Kali Yuga". Hemachandra rose to prominence under the reign of Siddharaja and was an advisor to his successor Kumarpal. During Kumarapala's reign, Gujarat became a reputed center of culture. A prodigious writer, Hemchandra wrote grammars of Sanskrit and Prakrit, texts on science and logic and practically all branches of Indian philosophy. Acharya Hemchandra presented an earlier version of the Fibonacci sequence. It was presented around 1150, about fifty years before Fibonacci (1202). Narsinh Mehta - નરસિંહ મહેતા Narsinh Mehta (1414 – 1481) was a poet saint from Junagadh. He is also known as Narsinh Bhagat as he has written poems and devotional songs in praise of Shri Krishna. He is acclaimed as Adi Kavi ("first among poets") of Gujarati literature. His devotional poems have highest level of Spiritual Philosophy. He also had very good knowledge of music as he has narrated his poems in ancient Ragas. He was also a revolutionary who never considered the caste system and saw God in every man. Meerabaiમીરાંબાઈ Meerabai(1498 – 1557)was originally from Mevad, Rajashthan but she has contributed a lot to Gujarati devotional poems. Like Narsinh Mehta, she has written many devotional poems in praise of Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna's worship is never without Meerabai's devotional songs. Dayaramદયારામ Dayaram ( Tushar Shukla, a renowned Gujarati poet, has a background in Literature and Linguistic Science. He began his career at All India Radio as an announcer and later retired as the director of AIR Rajkot. After retiring, he dedicated himself to serving literature and his mother tongue, Gujarati. He has authored around 30 books, with a majority of them containing his poems and solutions to family problems. He also gives talks on married life and child upbringing. Shukla's poems have been sung by well-known singers, and the famous music duo Shyamal-Saumil even created a special CD featuring singers like Kavita Krishnamurti and Rupkumar Rathod lending their voices to his poems. He has also written songs and dialogues for TV programs and Gujarati films. The government of Gujarat has honored him with the 'Best Lyricist' award on three occasions, and his poems have been included in the textbooks of Gujarat and Maharashtra. In addition to his writing contributions in radio, theatre, TV, and films, Shukla is a columnist for Gujarat Samachar and Divya Bhaskar newspapers. He has received the 'Gauravvanta Gujarati' award from Divya Bhaskar newspaper and Chitraklekha magazine. He was also recognized as the 'Times Person of the Year' and received the TIMA award for his portrayal of sensitivity and respect towards women in his poems. He has been honored with the 'Gujarat Ratna Award' and was recently listed as one of the 500 influential Gujaratis by Feelings magazine. Shukla teaches journalism at Gujarat University and the R J training center of L J College. He also provides training at the regional training center of All India Radio. Additionally, he has appeared as a guest artist in films like Be Yaar, Shubharambh, Vtamin C, and Loveni Bhavai. He has also worked as a model in an advertisement for the HOF company.
