The mother-son duo are similar when it comes to work ethics and behaviour. However, they manage to argue over their sense of humour and film choices
It’s an emotional moment for actor-director Mrinal Kulkarni. The Ye Re Ye Re Paisa (2018) actor meets us with her son Virajas, for an interview. Virajas, has written her next film Ti & Ti, which marks their debut in the rom-com genre. The artistes don’t shy away from correcting each other, and are equally generous with praises.
Excerpts:
This is your first experiment with a rom-com. Tell us all about it?
Mrinal: As an actor, I have never done a romantic film. People perceive me as a serious person. I am sincere and genuine, but definitely, not so serious. So, I wanted to break this image. When Pushkar Jog (actor, producer) came to me to make a rom-com, I felt it was time I explored this genre. I then asked Virajas to write it for me.
Virajas: She is saying, she asked me. Well, it was more like a taunt. I was out of Whistling Woods International and working on my theatre projects. So, she said, ‘It’s been two years, now write a film’ (laughs). Honestly, romantic comedies are not my cup of tea. There is a running joke among my friends, that if I enjoy a sweet dish, it has to be terrific. So, I kind of applied the same logic here, if I am attempting a rom-com, it has to be great.
Mrinal: No, wait, I told him, that a writer should be able to pen any genre. You can’t pre-decide. And, he gave me a one page draft that very night. I was happy with what I read. So, I kind of dragged him into this project, (laughs).
What were the challenges of working with each other?
Mrinal: According to me, I feel there is no ‘one’ audience. There are classes, masses and then age groups, which is why, I did not want to stick to just one narrative. I forced Virajas to divide the narration. Al Hindustan Times, Pune | ByAnjali Shetty Jun 20, 2018 04:14 PM IST Actor-director Mrinal Kulkarni, who celebrates her 46th birthday on June 21, will start the celebrations this year a day prior with a trek to an undisclosed location. On June 21, the Rama Madhav (2014) director will be inaugurating an art exhibition for artist Chintamani Hasabnis, who creates special type of art that enables the visually impaired to see. Sharing her plans for her birthday, Mrinal says, “There are two important things in my genes — history and nature. So, in one way or the other, I incorporate these in my birthday celebrations. I will be going on pre-birthday trek to enjoy the nature. On my birthday I will be doing something that is extremely close to my heart. Chintamani’s work helps the visually impaired and I am happy I could help promote this cause and create awareness in some way.” During her childhood, Mrinal shares that birthdays never meant cakes or parties for her. Yet, it was one of the most important days of her life. She adds, “I grew up in a house which was surrounded by literature. On my birthdays, my dad would take me to a book shop where I could pick whichever book I wanted. I clearly remember how excited I would be.” Growing up, Mrinal took to trekking and it became a birthday ritual for the Ye Re Ye Re Paisa actor. “Everyday is a celebration. Ruchir (her husband), me and my son Virajas, celebrate each day, we don’t need a particular occasion. In fact, my son always jokes that he is the biggest gift I could ever have,” says Mrinal with a smile. Mrinal Kulkarni: I was embarrassed to scold Farooque Shaikh while enacting 'Shrikant'
Shaikh Sahab's second Smriti Din will be observed Monday, December 28.
Now a veteran actress and director of Marathi movies, Mrinalji nurtures fond memories of Shaikh Sahab whom she admired from her adolescent years. "I was very young, about 18 or 19, when I took up the offer to be Abhaya in 'Shrikant'. Before that I had played the female lead in the Marathi serial 'Swami' opposite Ravindra Mankani. That show had also become very popular," she says.
But 'Shrikant' was a sublime experience. It was based on a novel by noted Bengali author Sharatchandra Chatterji. Mrinalji says, "I was excited to be a part of this project because I come from a literary family. My grandfather G N Dandekar was a well known novelist, and would you believe, his work was deeply influenced by the writings of Sharatchandra. I was awestruck by the coincidence when director Pravin Nischol selected me. It seemed as if I was chosen to receive this special blessing."

She had not yet completed her graduation. "Meanwhile, Farooque Shaikh was a veteran actor, having made all those wonderful films alongside Deepti Naval and Rekha. When I learnt that I would be working with him, I actually exclaimed, 'Oh my God!' I
