&#;Come Together&#;, the lead song on The Beatles&#; Abbey Road album, was conceived by John Lennon as a political rallying cry for the writer, psychologist and pro-drugs activist Timothy Leary.

It was a funky record – it&#;s one of my favorite Beatle tracks, or, one of my favourite Lennon tracks, let&#;s say that. It&#;s funky, it&#;s bluesy, and I&#;m singing it pretty well. I like the sound of the record. You can dance to it. I&#;d buy it!

&#;Come Together&#; was composed for Timothy Leary&#;s campaign to stand against Ronald Reagan as governor of California. Leary and his wife Rosemary had traveled to Montreal for John and Yoko&#;s bed-in for peace, which took place on 1 June The Learys participated in the recording of Lennon&#;s &#;Give Peace A Chance&#;, and were both namechecked in the lyrics.

‘Give Peace A Chance’

The following day Lennon offered to help Leary&#;s campaign. His slogan was ‘Come together, join the party’. Lennon sent Leary a demo tape of song ideas. However, the campaign ended when Leary was imprisoned for cannabis possession, allowing Lennon to record the song with The Beatles.

When The Beatles&#x; catalogue went on streaming services on Christmas Eve , there was a peculiar surge to the top. The song everyone wanted to listen to, in the US at least, was not one of the beefy, beaty pop hits of the early s, nor one of the psychedelic swirls from and , nor was it one of the grand anthems that prefigured the arena-rock age. What Americans wanted to listen to was Come Together , which instantly became the most streamed Beatles track in the US (six years on, it remains the second most streamed Beatles song worldwide on Spotify, behind Here Comes the Sun ).

Come Together owes a big chunk of its ubiquity to the most reviled Beatles-related event in history, the movie Sgt Pepper&#x;s Lonely Hearts Club Band, conceived by producer Robert Stigwood as a star vehicle for the Bee Gees, following their success supplying the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever&#x; another Stigwood production &#x; the year before.

The Boston hard rock band Aerosmith were cast in Sgt Pepper&#x;s as Future Villain Band, the evil force that would poison young minds, pollute the environment, and subvert the democratic process , an outcome to be achieved by performing Come Together while singer Steven Tyler &#x; watched by comedian Frankie Howerd and before being wrestled by Peter Frampton &#x; fondled the female lead, naturally.

What Aerosmith did was take the music of The Beatles to America&#x;s classic rock radio format, a place it had never quite fitted before. Their version of Come Together reached into the heart of US rock culture: released as a single, it reached number 23 in the US in , Aerosmith&#x;s last hit until their lates revival, and became a staple of their greatest hits albums and their stage show. Background and inspiration

In early , John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, held nonviolent protests against the Vietnam War, dubbed the Bed-ins for Peace. In May, during the Montreal portion of the bed-in, counterculture figures from across North America visited Lennon. Among the visitors was the American psychologist Timothy Leary, an early advocate of LSD whom Lennon admired. Leary intended to run for Governor of California in the following year's election, and he asked Lennon to write him a campaign song based on the campaign's slogan, "Come Together – Join the Party!" The resulting chant was only a line long: "Come together and join the party". Lennon promised to finish and record the song, and Leary later recalled Lennon giving him a tape of the piece, but the two did not interact again.

In July , during sessions for the Beatles' album Abbey Road, Lennon used the phrase "come together" from the Leary campaign song to compose a new song for the album. Based on the single "You Can't Catch Me" by the American guitarist Chuck Berry, Lennon's composition began as an up-tempo blues number, only slightly altering Berry's original lyric of "Here come a flattop / He was movin' up with me" to "Here come ol' flattop / He come groovin' up slowly".
