Why did actor Ashir Azeem of ‘Dhuwan’ fame leave Pakistan?

Ashir Azeem (Urdu: عاشر عظیم‬‎) is a Pakistani-Canadian film and television director, actor, writer and former civil services officer who rose to fame through television series Dhuwan in 1994.

Early life and career

Ashir Azeem was born in Quetta in 1962 where he attended early schooling. He has done aeronautical engineering in 1981–1984 from Pakistan Air Force College of Aeronautical Engineering and later, he received degree of BBA from Institute of Business Administration, Karachi in 1984–1986. In 1988, Ashir joined Central Superior Services of Pakistan. While working in there, he wrote a story about the Pakistan Armed Forces. Later one of his colleagues advised him to create a television serial on his story.  The serial titled Dhuwan based on his story was aired on Pakistan Television Corporation (now PTV Home) in 1994. He appeared in the serial as the lead actor and gained public recognition. Dhuwan became popular all over the country and received positive response. Ashir then moved to Canada. In 2015, he announced his debut film Maalik which he wrote in 1993.The film was directed written and co-produced by Ashir and was released on 8 April 2016. Ashir also acted in Hassan Rana‘s film Yalghaar.

Civil Service

In addition to his media work, Ashir Azeem is a Pakistani civil servant. In 2015, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) ordered that Ashir is investigated for “corrupt practices and misuse of authority in awarding a contract for computerization of the FBR department to a foreign company.” In 2016, the Federal Board of Revenue disciplined Ashir for “inefficiency, misconduct, and corruption but he was then acquitted of all charges.” After being cleared of all accusations he resigned from Pakistan Customs Services (PCS). He also played a lead roll in bringing custom reforms in Pakistan.

Civil Service

In addition to his media work, Ashir Azeem was a Pakistani civil servant. He served in the civil service Federal Board of Revenue by being assiduous and honest. He worked tirelessly to improve Pakistan's economy and took steps by staying in Pakistan Customs and coordinating with CBR and other departments. During his service at Pakistan Customs, in order for Pakistan's industry to proliferate rapidly, he developed a software based on a system that cleared containers in 4 hours where previously it used to be cleared in 12 days.

Ashir Azeem is a Pakistani writer and actor, who rose to instant and immense in the 90s, with a smash hit drama ‘Dhuwan’. It involved a group of friends who formed a vigilante force by night and had professional lives by day. After which he left the media world to focus on his own career as a civil servant. In the last few years his contribution to Pakistani cinema was a hit film by the name of ‘Maalik’, which in the footsteps of his drama, focuses on the nature of corruption in Pakistani society, had good dialogues and had enough action to keep the scenes interesting and cinematically appealing.

Ans: I am Good

 

  1. How was life, growing up for you?

Ans: The best childhood one can have. I grew up in wilderness and mountains deep in Baluchistan. We were not wired to computers or restricted to four walls. Ran with the wild and breathed fresh air. Hence my lifelong love for wide open spaces, nature, animals, human spirit, dignity and undiluted freedom and independence.

 

  1. What kind of a family setting did you grow up in? Was it strict or liberal?

Ans: I am eldest of four siblings. I grew up completely unrestricted. We did not live in a joint family so completely unaware of politics and intrigue of any kind.

 

  1. How did you develop an interest in films?

Ans: Quite frankly, I don’t know. I guess one thing led to the next. My complete independent nature with no preconceived notions about anything and the desire to experiment with and experience everything has led me to very interesting things in life. Film, being one of those.

 

  1. Were you active in school plays? Did that help you grow as an actor?

Ans: Not really. I did do a play or two at school but wasn’t really interested.

Dhuwan

Pakistani television drama show

Dhuwan (Urdu: دھواں, English: Smoke) is a 1994 Pakistani television series originally aired on Pakistan Television Corporation channel in 1994.

The play is based on a story of five friends, who take the challenge to fight against terrorists and drug dealers. The serial is known for its neat outdoor shooting and liberal use of ammunition to convey realism.

Plot

The story of this drama revolves around five young friends, each with a different background, who want to bring a positive change in society in order to serve their country. Azhar (Ashir Azeem) is newly appointed as Assistant superintendent of police. Earlier he had completed his engineering degree but to be able to contribute to the society, he opted for the police job. His first placement is in Quetta, where he finds his old friends: Dawood (Nabeel) who is a medical doctor. Their local friend Naveed also known as Nido (Asal Din Khan) who looks after his father's business. One of their old acquaintance Wajid is a crime reporter in a local newspaper. Naveed and Wajid train with their friend Hameed who is the owner of an arms store.

Azhar was being monitored by an undercover officer Sara (Nazli Nasr) posing as a UN worker. She most likely was providing information to the ministry in Islamabad. Their first meeting was on a flight to Quetta. Azhar is handed over a case of narcotics by the ministry and he is advised to assemble a team to carry out operations which cannot be shared with the local police, to avoid any possible tip-offs to the criminals. These five friends begin to train as a crack squad. They also begin to create a computerized database of National Identity Cards, passports, and vehicle data.
