Biography of Hazrat Abu Muhammad Muhiyuddin Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Razi Allah Anhu

Hazrat Abu Muhammad Muhiyuddin Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra) (also spelled Jeelani, Gilani, Gillani, Al-Gilani) was a Sufi Sheikh and the founder of the Qadiri Sufi order (Silsila). He was born in the month of Ramadan in 470 AH (1077-78 AD) in the Persian province of Jilan (Iran), south of the Caspian Sea. His contribution to Sufism and Sharia was so immense that he became known as the spiritual pole of his time, al-Ghawth al-A'zam.

Family & Lineage

One of his many titles is ‘al-Hasani wal Husseini’ because he was blessed with direct lineage to the Holy Prophet ﷺ through his father Sheikh Abu Saleh Moosa (ra) who was a direct descendant of Imam Hassan Ra.gif. He was a very pious and humble person as well as a master in the tactics of Jihad and it was due to this that he was given the title of “Jangi Dost”. Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra) was also blessed with direct lineage to the Holy Prophet ﷺ through his mother Sayyida Bibi Ummul Khair Fatima (ra) who was a direct descendant of Imam Hussein Ra.gif. She was also a very pious person. The circumstances surrounding the blessed marriage of Hazrat Abu Saleh Moosa (ra) and Hazrat Bibi Ummul Khair (ra) were quite miraculous to say the least.

Sayyidi Abdullah Sauma’ee was the maternal grandfather of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra). He was a very patient, humble, kind and sincere person. Sayyida Aisha Zaahida (ra) was the paternal aunt of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra). She was a very kind and pious woman. Her entire life was spent in the remembrance of Almighty Allah.

Predictions of his Birth

Abdul Qadir Jilani (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ) was still studying in a Madrassa located in Baghdad shareef when his dearest father and grandfather sayedi Abu Saalaeh (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ) and Hazrat Abdullah Soom’ee (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ) migrated from this worldly life to the better Hereafter. After their demise the burden of his education fell on the holy shoulders of his sanctified mother (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہَا). With endurance, truthfulness and loyalty, she performed the duty which was appointed to her. When Huzoor Ghous-e-Azam (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ) was about 18 years old he wished for an approval to journey to Baghdad, so he may complete his education and strive for more & more divine knowledge. His loving mother (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہَا) permitted him without a 2 thought agreed to this self-sacrificing appeal.

Sayyeda Um-mul Khair Fatima (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہَا) in here old age said: Good-bye to her son Abdul Qadir Jilani (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ). It was such a stage in her life, when parents generally hang on to their children for ethical and economical backing but this religious and clean servant of Almighty Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) desired just the liking of both Almighty Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) and his dearest prophet (صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ). Although she was very fond of Huzoor Ghous-e-Azam (رَضِیَ اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَنْہُ) but she did not let her emotional spirits come afore the liking of Almighty Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ). She desired her son to become a man of true knowledge and wise wisdom.

Particularly in that time, people travelled a lot more over on foot by the means of horses & camels passing between thick forests and jungles. There was a real threat of voyagers being mugged and executed. Significant to all the circumstances she still braced his call and greeted well wishes by kissing his forehead. Shaykh Muhyi’din ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani Wal-Husaini born 29 Shaban 470 AH in the town of Na’if, district of Gilan-e Gharb, Gilan, Iran and died Monday, February 14, 1166 (11 Rabi’ al-thani 561 AH), in Baghdad,(1077–1166 CE), was a Persian, Hanbali Sunni jurist and sufi based in Baghdad. The Qadiriyya tariqa (Sufi order) is named after him. He was the first in Qadiriyya silsila. For a mass population he is also known as -: • Al-Jilani

BIRTH-:

Al-Gilani (pronounced ‘jilani’) was born around 1077 in Gilan of [[Iraq], a historic village near the towns 40 kilometers south of Baghdad, as evidenced by historical studies and academic Kilanyia adopted by a family in Baghdad. Al-Gilani’s father, Abu Salih Musa al-Hasani, was a descendant of Hasan ibn Ali (Hasan). Hasan was the eldest son of Ali and Fatimah. Ali was Muhammad’s son-in-law and also cousin and Fatima was Muhammad’s daughter. Al-Gilani’s mother was the daughter of Abdullah Sawmai, a descendant of Husayn ibn Ali, the younger son of Ali and Fatima. Thus, Al-Gilani was both a Hasani and Hussaini Sayyid, and, because of this, he is also known as double Sayyid.

TITLE OF SAYYID-:

Gilani is granted the title Sayyid to indicate his descent from Muhammad. The name Muhiyudin describes him as a “reviver of religion”. Gilan (Arabic al-Jilani) refers to his place of birth, Gilan. However, Gilani also carried the epithet Baghdadi. referring to his residence and burial in Baghdad. He is also called al-Hasani wa’l
