Indresh Kumar, the maverick RSS leader who speaks his mind

The speculation about differences between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its mother organisation the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over the BJP's low performance in the Lok Sabha elections is now gaining ground with a top RSS leaderoffering his unique interpretation of the election results.

Indresh Kumar, a member of the national executive of the RSS, has said that the BJP was restricted to 240 seats, well below the majority mark, due to its arrogance. Referring to the INDIA bloc of opposition parties, he said, "And those who had no faith in Ram, they together were stopped at 234." Indresh's comment comes right after the RSSchief Mohan Bhagwatsaid three days ago that a true sevak (the one who serves the people) never shows arrogance and always maintains decorum in public life.

While these two statements that refer to arrogance will fuel the speculation about a rift between the RSS and the BJP, there is nothing new about the statements because the RSS has always been known for expressing its differences with the BJP.

On Narendra Modibecoming the Prime Minister for the third time, Indresh Kumar had said on June 9, "Today, the rarest of the rare is happening. It has become possible which seemed impossible. That's why I extend my best wishes."

Indresh, the maverick

While a number of RSS leaders often express their independent views, Indresh is particularly known to speak his mind. In 2015, the RSS leadership was annoyed with him for “unauthorisedly” wading into a political row over then foreign minister Sushma Swaraj helping Lalit Modi when the former IPL boss was wanted by law. Swaraj, who was under pressure from opposition to resign after admitting that she helped Lalit Modi, found support from Indresh who defended her and said she had never compromised on nationalism and patri

Indresh Kumar is a well-known figure in Indian politics and social work. He is a senior member of the National Executive of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and serves as a patron and key leader of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM), an organization linked to the RSS that aims to promote unity and dialogue among Muslims in India.

Kumar played an important role in the 2008 Amarnath stir in Jammu and Kashmir, where he actively coordinated activities for the Sangh Parivar in the area. His work in various social and political movements has made him a notable person within the organization.

However, Indresh Kumar’s biography also includes controversy. He was named as an accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2007 Ajmer Blast case, which led to the deaths of three Muslims and injuries to twelve others. His name came up during the questioning of Colonel Shrikant Purohit, the main suspect in the Malegaon blasts.

The CBI claimed that Kumar took part in a meeting in Jaipur with six others to plan the Ajmer blast, describing him as a mentor who encouraged others to work with different religious groups to carry out their plans without being noticed.

According to the charge sheet, Kumar guided people to attend meetings using fake names to avoid suspicion. Responsibilities for the attack were given to others, including Sunil Joshi, who was later murdered, and tasks were assigned for gathering weapons and funding.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has looked into Kumar’s role in several other cases, including the Malegaon blasts in 2006 and 2008, the Samjhauta Express blast in 2007, and the Mecca Masjid blast. However, they did not find enough evidence to formally charge him in these cases. These incidents resulted in the tragic loss of many lives, especially among the Muslim community.
