Tom Werner, who has been involved in Major League Baseball for more than 30 years and whose love for the Red Sox spans more than five decades, has played a vital role in the team's success on the field, the saving and restoration of Fenway Park, and its difference-making impact in the community.

Werner began his baseball career as leader of the ownership group that purchased the San Diego Padres in 1990, and served as the club's majority owner until December 22, 1994. He subsequently joined forces with John W. Henry and Larry Lucchino to acquire the Red Sox, the only bidders to make saving Fenway Park a cornerstone of their proposal. Together, they and their partners won the right to buy the team on December 20, 2001 and completed the purchase on February 27, 2002. Three years later, after substantial improvements to the ballpark, Werner, Henry, and Lucchino on March 23, 2005 pledged their long-term commitment to Fenway Park, inspiring major investment in the surrounding neighborhood and sparking a remarkable transformation. Because of their vision, Fenway Park in 2012 became the first ballpark to celebrate its 100th anniversary, and with over $400 million in renovations, its viability as "America's Most Beloved Ballpark" has been assured for years to come.

On the field, the Red Sox have enjoyed considerable success under Henry and Werner. Over their 21 years of ownership, the club has won a Major League-best four World Series Championships, claimed five American League East titles, and made 11 postseason appearances. During that span, from 2002-22, the Red Sox recorded the fourth-highest winning percentage in baseball (.551), notably setting a franchise record with 108 regular-season wins in 2018.

Thomas Charles Werner (born April 12, 1950) is an American television producer and businessman. Through his investment in Fenway Sports Group, he is currently chairman of both Liverpool Football Club and Boston Red Sox.

Werner first became a part owner of the San Diego Padres in 1990, later was part of a group that purchased the Boston Red Sox, and has served as chairman of the Red Sox since February 27, 2002. Since then, the team has won four World Series—the 2004 title ending an 86-year championship drought—and qualified for the postseason ten times. In 2018, the Red Sox won a franchise-record 108 games and went on to win a ninth World Series title. Werner became chairman of Liverpool F.C. in 2010. In his time in office, Liverpool has won nine trophies, the league cup in 2012, 2022 and 2024, the UEFA Champions League in 2019, the UEFA Super Cup in 2019, the FIFA Club World Cup also in 2019, the FA Cup in 2022, the FA Community Shield in 2022 and the Premier League in 2020 under coach Jürgen Klopp.

As a television producer, Werner formed a partnering with producer Marcy Carsey to create Carsey-Werner. The company produced several shows including The Cosby Show, Roseanne, 3rd Rock from the Sun and That '70s Show.

Early life

Werner was born in Los Angeles, California, U.S., to a Jewish family who originally hail from Germany, ori in New York City; one of three children born to Elizabeth (née Grumbach) and Henry Werner. He has one sister Patsy Werner Hanson, and one brother Peter Werner. He attended the St. Bernard's School in Manhattan, The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. Werner later graduated from Harvard University in 1971.

With over 2000 episodes of television produced Carsey Werner has been one of the leading suppliers and distributors to the worldwide marketplace for over twenty-five years. As executive producer of a number of landmark programs including, “The Cosby Show”,” A Different World”, “Roseanne”, “3 Rock From The Sun” and “That 70’s Show” Werner and his partner, Marcy Carsey, have obtained a vast library of programs seen in over 175 countries and translated into 50 different languages. In 2000, Carsey Werner joined forces with Oprah Winfrey to form the Oxygen Network, a 24 hour cable channel serving the modern woman. The Network was recently acquired by NBC Universal and is one of the fastest growing cable networks ever, now in almost 65,000,000 homes.

Werner started his career at ABC Television and eventually became Senior Vice President of Primetime Series in December 1980. Along the way he helped develop such shows as “Mork & Mindy”, “Soap”, “Bosom Buddies”, “Three’s Company” and “The Love Boat”. In 1981 he joined Marcy Carsey to form their own production company.
