    Prime Minister of Jordan since 2024

    Jafar Hassan (Arabic: جعفر حسان; born 1968) is a Jordanian official who has served as the prime minister of Jordan since 2024.

    Education

    He holds a diplôme d'études supérieures and a Ph.D. in Political Sciences and International Economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He also holds graduate degrees from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, Boston University and a BA degree from the American University in Paris.

    In 2020, he was awarded the Gold and Silver Star of Japan's Order of the Rising Sun for strengthening ties between Jordan and Japan.

    Career

    After joining Jordan's foreign service in 1991, he was posted abroad to Washington D.C. and Geneva. From 2006 to 2009, he was director of the International Affairs Department at the Royal Hashemite Court. He was appointed as Minister of Planning and International Cooperation in 2009, a position he held until 2013.

    In 2014, he became chief of staff of the office of Jordan's King Abdullah II. In 2018, he was appointed deputy prime minister for economic affairs, and tasked with implementing reforms to cutting public debt. In 2021, he became director of the office (i.e. chief of staff) of the king.

    He was reappointed as Director of The Office of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein in May of 2021.

    He is the author of a book on Jordan's Political Economy, published in Arabic in 2020.

    Prime Minister

    On September 15, 2024, King Abdullah II appointed Hassan as Jordan's new prime minister. This followed parliamentary elections on September 10, 2024.

    Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan was a career diplomat and academic from the Sultanate of Oman., and one of the longest-serving diplomats to UNESCO as ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Oman from 1984 to 2009. He was promoted to Adviser with Special Grade at the Permanent Delegation in 2009 and continued in this capacity until 2016. From 2016 until his retirement in 2018 he served at the Embassy of Oman in Paris. He was decorated with 1 UNESCO Gold Medal, 3 UNESCO Silver Medals as well as the honorary title of "Ambassador for Peace". Dr. Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan died in Paris, France on 26 September 2020.

    Early life and education

    Hassan was born in 1950 to a merchant family in the commercial centre of Oman, Mutrah. As a young man, he studied geography at Beirut University in Lebanon, before returning to Oman in 1976.

    He was appointed the Director of the Department of Cultural Relations at the Ministry of Education. In the same year, he was named for the second time as President of the Al-Alhy Club and in 1983 was elected as the first Secretary-General of the University Club in Muscat, which later became known as the 'Cultural Club'.

    Diplomatic work

    In 1982, Hassan's position at the Ministry of Education was extended to Director General of Missions and External Relations. In this capacity, he attended the conferences of UNESCO, the Office of International Education, and The Arab Organisation for Education, Culture, and Science. In 1984, He was appointed as Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO, in Paris, France.

    Hassan worked as a permanent delegate of Oman from 1984 to 2009, during which time he served as President of the General Conference. He was awarded a UNESCO gold medal and three UNESCO silver medals.

    Jafar Hassan (1968), a Jordanian politician and former minister, has served in several positions, including Minister of Planning and International Cooperation (2009-2013), Director of the Office of His Majesty King Abdullah II (2014 – 2018), and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Economic Affairs in 2018, before serving again as Director of the Office of His Majesty King Abdullah II (2021-2024). He is the author of a book printed in Arabic on Jordan’s political economy.

     

    He received his education at the Bishop School in Amman, graduating in 1985, and pursued his higher education in France, Switzerland, and the United States, where he received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees.
