The Ratham received a rousing reception at Ettayapuram, the birth place of the legendary poet, filled with fervour and gaiety.  Panchayat President Ramalakshmi offered flowers to Bharathi Chellamma statue at the Bharathi Mani Mandapam.  Tahsildar Krishna Kumari paid homage with garlands and the Municipal Executive Officer Ganesan offered his respects and gave a welcome address.

At the Bharati Illam in Ettayapuram, the in-charge, Mahadevi welcomed the Ratham. Executives of the Kamban Corporation were also present.  The family members of Vilathikulam Kamureddy, who provided the support to Bharathi and Chellamma for three years, at Kadayam also attended the reception.

The  Principal, Heads of Department, and faculty members of Bharathiyar Centenary Polytechnic College also offered their respects to the Statue.

Velkani, the receptionist of the W. Chidambaranar Birth Home in Ottapidaram and and Librarian Meenakshi paid homage with flower garlands. A large number of villagers gathered along the route to welcome the Ratham.

The Ratham got a warm welcome at the Kattabomman Fort in Panchalankurichi. Tahsildar Mrs. Nishanthini presided over the function alongwith Deputy Tahilsdar Anand.  Regional Development Commissioner Venkatachalam welcomed the gathering. District Tourism Officer Srinivasan gave a special address.  Revenue Officer Karpagavalli and Village Administrative office Raja, Panchayat Secretary P Subramanian were also present. 140th Birth Anniversary of Mahakhavi Bharathiyar was celebrated at Chellamma Bharathi Learning Centre in Kadayam, Tenkasi district on 14th December 2022. Isaikkavi Ramanan , Tamil Poet , writer and Orator was the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest garlanded the statue of Chellamma- Bharathi and all the visitors paid floral tributes.

The Chief Guest Isaikkavi Ramanan in his address spoke about Bharathi’s connections with Kadayam. The wedding of Bharathi and Chellamma took place at Kadayam village on 27th June 1897 and Bharathiyar’s association with Kadayam started from then. Isaikkavi also mentioned that the first poem composed by Bharathi at Kadayam, was during his wedding with Chellamma. He also narrated many instances from the life of Bharathiyar in Kadayam. He said that the most conservative society at Kadayam did not accept Bharathi who was far ahead of his time. The present generations seem to be more receptive to the Bharathiyar principles than those of his own generation.

Isaikkavi Ramanan said that he has roots in Kadayam , as his maternal uncles were all from  this village. Therefore as a person from Kadayam he called upon the people of the village to make amends for the way Bharathiyar was treated 100 years ago. Emphasising the need to take Bharathi to the younger generation, he appreciated Sevalaya’s efforts to spread Bharathi’s message among students.

Earlier, on 13th December 2022 various competitions for students of schools in and around Kadayam were held.  700 students from more than 20 schools participated.  Competitions like Essay, Poem recitation, Oratorical and Quiz on Bharathi’s life were conducted.  Prizes were distributed to the winners of the competition by the Chief Guest.

Who was Subramania Bharati?

Subramania Bharati (1882-1921) was a Tamil writer, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist, social reformer, and polyglot from India. He was born on December 11, 1882, in Ettayapuram, Tamil Nadu, Subramaniya Bharati, also known as Mahakavi Bharathiyar, showed poetic talent at an early age. Composing Tamil poetry at seven, he impressed with his depth of understanding by age 11. Married at 15 to Chellammal in June 1897, Bharati is celebrated as one of Tamil's greatest writers. His parents were Lakshmi Ammal and Chinnaswamy Iyer. Recognized for his literary contributions, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu honored him on September 20, 2021, marking the 100th anniversary of his death.
