Crystal Lynn Bernard (born September 30, 1961) is a retired American singer-songwriter and actress, best known for her roles as Helen Chappel-Hackett on the sitcom Wings (1990–1997), Amy on It's a Living (1985–1989), and K.C. Cunningham on Happy Days (1983–1984).
Early life
Born in Garland, Texas to televangelist Jerry Wayne Bernard and teacher Gaylon Fussell, Bernard became an entertainer at a young age, singing gospel songs with her older sister, Robyn (1959–2024), also an actress. One recording of the two that has survived from those years is a song called "The Monkey Song" on Feudin' Fussin' and Frettin' , recorded when Crystal was eight years old. The recording is from a 1972 Thomas Road Baptist Church service led by Jerry Falwell. In addition to Robyn, she also has two younger sisters: Scarlett and Angelique Bernard.
Bernard studied acting at Alley Theatre while growing up in Houston, Texas. She attended Spring High School and continued her education at Baylor University, studying acting and international relations.
Career
Television
Bernard got her start in prime time television on the sitcom Happy Days, playing K.C. Cunningham during season 10 (1982–83). Then, after various guest appearances on other series, she joined the cast of the resurrected, syndicated version of the sitcom It's a Living, playing waitress Amy Tompkins. In 1989, she starred in a television pilot, Chameleons, created by Glen A. Larson. She played Shelley, a self-pro Congratulations to Cindy, ACHF’s latest Distinguished Service Award Recipient! On October 10th, Ashland Community Health Foundation announced its 2022 Distinguished Service Award recipient – Cindy Bernard – at a special gathering at the ACHF office. After a prolonged period of keeping the news under wraps, the 2021 DSA recipient, Karen Drescher, happily presented the award to Cindy. Cindy has been a resident of Ashland for over 30 years, following her parents and siblings from the Chicago area. Soon after arriving in Ashland, Cindy began volunteering for many community organizations. She served on the boards of the Ashland Family YMCA, Mt. Ashland Racing Association, Ashland High Ski & Snowboard team, and Ashland Chamber of Commerce, serving two years as president. She was also a long-time volunteer with the Ashland Independent Film Festival. Cindy has a long and impressive history with our foundation. She was first introduced to ACHF by her parents, Dick and Jean, who were role models for generosity and community service. Both were long-time supporters of the foundation and were honored with a Distinguished Service Award in 2006 for their exceptional contributions to Ashland Community Hospital and the broader community. Cindy’s brother, Dave, was also a Distinguished Service Award recipient in 2008 for his volunteer involvement throughout Ashland. Cindy began supporting our work in 1995 as an avid gala attendee and has fond memories of family gatherings before and after the event. She joined the foundation’s board of directors in 2019 when she decided it was her turn to continue her family’s legacy of board service. During her tenure, she has served on the Asset Management Committee, Development Committee, and the Executive Committee. Cindy jumped in with both feet, becoming vice president in 2020 and president in 2021. She is currently serving an unprecedented third year as preside Jodie Foster not only confirmed she's gay while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards -- she announced she's single. Though they are no longer together, Foster publicly thanked her former partner and mother to her two sons Charlie and Kit, Cydney Bernard. While many are considering Foster's speech last night to be her official coming out, she's publicly spoken about Bernard before. According to The Wrap, while accepting an award at the Women in Entertainment Breakfast in 2007, the actress thanked "my beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss." The former couple met on the set of the 1993 film "Sommersby," where Bernard -- now a producer-- was working as a production coordinator. In 2008, it was reported that the two broke things off, ending their 15-year-relationship. Foster is very protective of her privacy and has not spoken about the breakup. But it was reported that Foster broke up with Bernard in order to pursue a relationship with writer/producer Cindy Mort, whom she met while filming "The Brave One" in 2006. The next four years will change America forever. But HuffPost won't back down when it comes to providing free and impartial journalism.
