My Lovely Sam Soon (Korean: 내 이름은 김삼순) is a 2005 South Korean television series based on the internet novel of the same title by Ji Soo-hyun, which was published on March 9, 2004. Touted as the Korean version of Bridget Jones's Diary, it starred Kim Sun-a (who gained 15 pounds for the role),Hyun Bin, Jung Ryeo-won and Daniel Henney. The series aired on MBC from June 1 to July 21, 2005 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55 (KST) for 16 episodes.

"Sam-soon" is an old-fashioned name in Korean culture. It is translated as "3rd daughter" (sam (삼) is three, soon (순) is meek or feminine).

The romantic comedy-drama series was a huge hit, with an average viewership rating of 37.6% and its peak rating of 49.1% (for the finale) makes it one of the highest-rated Korean dramas of all time. It also won numerous awards, including the Baeksang Arts Awards Grand Prize for TV and the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards for Kim Sun-ah.

An abridged 8-episode version of the series was released on Wavve on September 6, 2024 which is part of the platform's "New Classic Project".

Synopsis

Kim Sam-soon (Kim Sun-a) is loud and brash, yet insecure about her weight. She has always been embarrassed by her old-fashioned first name, and nearing her 30th birthday, she dreams of changing it. She is an excellent baker with a fervent passion for making desserts. On Christmas Eve, Sam-soon gets dumped by her cheating boyfriend (Lee Kyu-han) and loses her job. One of the witnesses to her public humiliation is Hyun Jin-heon (Hyun Bin), the owner of upscale French restaurant Bon Appetit. Biography[]

Henney was born in Carson City, Michigan, on November 28, 1979. His mother was Korean, while his father was American and of Irish descent. He started modeling in the U.S. in 2001 and worked in France, Italy, Hong Kong, and Taiwan while attending college. After his debut in South Korea with an advertisement for the Amore Pacific's cosmetic "Odyssey Sunrise", he became a spokesperson for commercials for Olympus cameras and Daewoo Electronics's Klasse air conditioners.

Despite not having any prior knowledge of the Korean language, Henney became a household name through the South Korean hit TV drama, My Lovely Sam Soon ("My Name is Kim Sam Soon"). He played the role of Dr. Henry Kim, a surgeon who is devotedly in love with Hee-jin, another character in the show. My Lovely Sam Soon was the most popular Korean drama in 2005; although Henney starred as a supporting actor, his performance and physical appearance was widely noticed by its audience.

Henney then starred in another South Korean drama, Spring Waltz, in 2006. He later learned the Korean language and appeared on a few variety shows, such as Family Outing. Henney starred in his first feature film in Korea, Seducing Mr. Perfect. His second feature film, titled My Father, won multiple awards in South Korea and was the first time in the country's history that a foreigner won all of the major cinema awards in the Best New Actor category. In 2009, he portrayed Agent Zero in the American film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In fall 2009, he portrayed Dr. David Lee in the CBS-produced TV drama Three Rivers. The following year, he returned to South Korea television for The Fugitive: Plan B. In addition to his acting career, Henney starred in numerous TV commercials and ads.

His father Philip Henney, an American of British descent, worked in a factory. He was a star basketball player at Carson City-Crystal High School and led the Eagles to the MHSAA Central region (CSAA) 2nd-place finish during his senior year in 1998.
