Brigitte Bardot – what was her uniqueness based on?

Since the 1960s, Brigitte Bardot, known as BB, continues to fascinate with her modern, sexy style. The beautiful blonde, glamorous in every way, casual, is to this day a mythical figure for many generations of women. Elle’s first icon, the embodiment of the free and rebellious woman. Simone de Bouvoir stated: “She combines the green fruit and the femme fatale.” In terms of fashion, it left its mark on her and future generations. Each of her clothing items has become iconic. She was always one step ahead of many celebrities of her era. Her favorite designer was Jean Bouquin, who became a close friend. Symbolizing the “ideal,” she claimed, “Unlike many other women, I was never confident. Probably this doubt, which never left me, gave me a kind of impertinence, disobedience through it.”

Angelic beauty and trend-setters

She was born in 1934 in Paris. She attended classical dance classes. Her impeccable figure owes a lot to these activities, in addition to natural factors.

Her angelic face, dreamlike figure and derived charisma have become her trademark. She became a star of cinema and song. Her appearance and style of dress, the manner of a liberated woman, have become synonymous with the Gentle Woman, and at the same time a femme fatale.

Brigitte was able to draw on classic fashion elements to create new looks. A style that has become a must-have. The hairstyle, almost “disheveled” and blonde color set a new trend in the area

Once in every five years “over the knee boots” make a comeback. And every time I’m tempted to give it a try and buy them, but always have some excuses not to. The very small, sane part of my brain says: “You will look like a cheap tart, you can’t wear them to work (some of my clients are extremely conservative christian white males), and they will only last one season. But then I saw these pictures of the Dutch Royal Family: Princess Maxima is wearing them! Shocking! I mean, if she can wear them, so can I! So maybe I’m going to listen to the little devil in my head this time and wave my creditcard…

Royal Highness Princess Maxima wearing brown and grey suede over the knee boots. (And leopard……I suddenly feel very frumpy).

Brigitte Bardot’s wearing hers with a leather and sequin mini dress.

Marc Jacobs, Fall 2009.

Daisy Lowe showing her boots and her underwear.

The Royal Highness of Cool: Debbie Harry.

Gucci, Fall 2009.

Lindsay Lohan on the September 2009 cover of Elle UK.

Isabel Marant, Fall 2009.

Actress Barbara Parkins (Valley of the Dolls) from head to toe in leather.

I never thought I would like Roberto Cavalli, but I love the dress and the boots – from the Fall 2009 collection.

Raquel Zimmermann as Debbie Harry with trademark boots in French Vogue, September 2009.

And ofcourse: Kate. Shot by Mario Sorrenti for Vogue China, December 2008.

About

the designers

Jean Bouquin was born in 1936. Although he dabbled in fashion for just seven years, Bouquin captured the bohemian spirit of St. Tropez’s jet-set society at the end of the 1960’s. After his success in St. Tropez, Bouquin opened a second shop in Paris called Mayfair, which continued his theme of relaxed "non-dressing". He retired from the fashion business in 1971 to enjoy his social life.

The Look

"Hippie deluxe" is the phrase which will forever be linked with Jean Bouquin’s clothes and lifestyle. His vision: a natural woman, draped with beads, who lives an ironically privileged hippie life wearing a luxurious interpretation of the nonconformist’s uniform, all sold in Bouquin’s boutique. Her printed panne velvet minidress uses drawstrings, borrowed from Indian pyjamas, at the cuffs, and ends just shy of the bikini bottoms she might have worn underneath it.

Who Wears It
