    American academic leader

    Henry Johnson Eyring (born September 19, 1963) is an American academic administrator who served as the seventeenth president of Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU–Idaho) from 2017 to 2023. From 2019 to 2023, he also served as an area seventy in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He previously served as both the academic and advancement vice president at BYU–Idaho, as well as director of the master of business administration (MBA) program in Brigham Young University's (BYU) Marriott School of Business.

    Early life and education

    Eyring was born in Palo Alto, California, a son of Henry B. Eyring and Kathleen (née Johnson). Eyring's family lived in the San Francisco Bay Area while his father taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business until 1971, after which they moved to Rexburg, Idaho, where his father was appointed president of Ricks College (now BYU–Idaho). From 1982 to 1984, Eyring served as a full-time missionary for the LDS Church in the Japan NagoyaMission. Eyring is a graduate of BYU, where he received a bachelor's degree in geology, an MBA, and a JD.

    Business

    From 1989 to 1998, Eyring worked at a Cambridge, Massachusetts management-consulting firm, Monitor Group, which was founded in 1983 by six entrepreneurs with Harvard Business School (HBS) ties. He has also served as a director of SkyWest Airlines since 1995. From 2002 to 2003, he was a special partner with Peterson Capital.

    Academia

    From 1998 to 2002, Eyring served as director of the MBA program in BYU's business school.

    Biography

    Henry J. Eyring serves as Advancement Vice President at Brigham Young University-Idaho. He received a bachelor's degree in geology from BYU in 1985, and then MBA and JD degrees, also from BYU, in 1989.

    From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Eyring worked for Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Monitor Company, a global management consulting firm. He was director of the BYU MBA Program from 1998 to 2002. From 2003 to 2006, he was president of the Japan Tokyo North Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since 1995, he has served as a director of SkyWest Airlines.

    Mr. Eyring is the author of two books, Mormon Scientist: The Life and Faith of Henry Eyring and Major Decisions: Taking Charge of Your College Education. He is married to the former Kelly Ann Child, and they are the parents of five children, including two current college students and one recent graduate.

    Henry Johnson Eyring is a university professor and administrator as well as a businessman and author. He was appointed president of BYU-Idaho on February 7, 2017, and began his administration on April 10, 2017. He concluded his service on August 1, 2023. He returned to Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Business and was asked to develop a Christ-centered leadership curriculum and teach graduate and undergraduate students.[1]

    At the time of his appointment as president at BYU-Idaho, he was serving as Academic Vice President of the university. He has also served as BYU-Idaho’s Advancement Vice President and associate academic vice president over online learning. He was director of the MBA program at the Marriott School of Management Brigham Young University from 1998 to 2002.

    Eyring was born on September 19, 1963, in Palo Alto, California, where his father taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The family moved to Rexburg, Idaho, when his father, Henry B. Eyring, was appointed president of Ricks College (1971–1977). The family then moved to Utah.

    Eyring earned his bachelor’s degree in geology, a Masters of Business Administration, and a law degree—all from BYU. From 1989 to 1998, he was a strategy consultant at a management-consulting firm, Monitor Group, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He began serving as a director of SkyWest Airlines in 1995, and from 2002 to 2003 he was a special partner with Peterson Capital.

    He has written or cowritten four books: a biography of his grandfather, theoretical chemist Henry Eyring entitled Mormon Scientist: The Life and Faith of Henry Eyring; The Innovative University: Changing the DNA of Higher Education (with Clayton M. Christensen); Major Decisions: Taking Charge of Your College Education; and the biography of his father, I Will Lead You Along: The Life of Henry B. Eyring (with Robert I. Eaton).
