Dunya movie dev anand biography

This movie landed up in my to-watch list rather by accident. I was looking for a previously unwatched Vyjayantimala movie to watch and review for the blog. And the three shortlisted films were Aas ka panchhi (1961), Dr Vidya (1962) and Duniya (1968). I do not like Rajendra kumar, so within ten minutes (even before the heroine makes an entry!), Aas ka Panchhi was out; Dr. Vidya, well, has some memorable songs – I love Pawan Diwani, Jaani tum to dole and Aye hai dilruba; So I watched it, but the entire viewing experience was, to mildly put it, unsatisfactory – if I were to review it now, I would just rant and be very uncharitable.

So I finally watched Duniya. Made in 1968 by Time films and directed by T.V. Prakash Rao, it starred Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala, Balraj Sahni, Sulochana, Achala Sachdev in pivotal roles. This was the third movie in which Dev Anand and Vyjayantimala starred together – the other two being Amardeep (1958) and Jewel Thief (1967).

I have a mental cut-off when it comes to Dev Anand movies. I like him in pre-Guide phase, and haven’t watched his movies past that date. The laid back boyishness and charm that he had in the fifties seems to just disappear post 1965. Okay, Jewel Thief was not that bad, but all that seems to remain is an exaggerated swagger and a literal lack of a spine! He can’t seem to stand still without swaying.

We are introduced to our main protagonists. We see them as three children in a village, as the movie begins –  Gopal and his sister Mala who live with their widowed mother and their neighbour and friend, Amar. Gopal has just been caught for stealing by the villagers – and his mother admonishes him in typical Bollywood good mom fashion. Amar who watches all this, swears that he shall become a ‘bada vakil‘ when he grows up and shall protect his dear friend! (Now why dont these people just tell Gopal to mend his ways was the f

Plot

The movie revolves around three friends Amarnath, Gopal, and his sister, Mala. As Mala and Gopal's mother is a widow and is unable to care for both the children, she decides to let her Bombay-based cousin, Shobha R. Sharma, adopt Mala. Gopal is always in trouble with the villagers for petty theft, and when he learns that Mala has left, he too runs away from home. Years later, all three have grown up. Mala's mother is deceased, while she continues to live with her aunt and uncle, Public Prosecutor Ramnath Sharma; Amarnath is now an Advocate working with Senior Advocate Mehta, and is in love with Mala, not knowing that she is his childhood friend; while Gopal has been to prison in Poona, Madras, and the Police in Hyderabad want him for questioning. Soon Amarnath will be defending Gopal, alias Ram Singh, for the murder of one Mohanchand – and it will be an uphill task for Amarnath – for not only do the Police have airtight evidence against Gopal, Mohanchand was to be the future son-in-law of Ramnath – who has sworn to bring Gopal to justice by hook or by crook

  • Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala: A truly iconic pair - Exclusive

Debonair, dashing Dev Anand matched all leading heroines of his era in romantic scenes very well. When he was paired opposite the doe eyed, beautiful danseuse Vyjayanthimalain Amardeep in 1958, it created a lot of sensation. Directed by T Prakash Rao, Amardeep also starred the talented Travancore sisters, Padmini and Ragini.
Right from day one, both Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala vibed well on the sets. Dev Anand’s (Ashok) was a deglamourized character, a perfect foil to his actress who was (Karuna) a rich lady. Their romantic scenes were natural, lively and full of emotions and comedy especially during the song Dekh Hame Awaz Na Dena. They spent a lot of time on the sets between shots, discussing their roles. However, Vyjayanthimala herself confessed, Dev Anand's best reactions romantically in Amardeep were to Padmini’s haunting dance number, Meri Man Ka Bawra Panchi.
It was the effort of Tamil icon Shivaji Ganeshan to pair both in Amardeep which was a moderate success. Both Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala complemented each other for winning Filmfare trophies in Kalapani and Sudhana in 1958. The duo were together during the relief fund collection ceremony for soldiers who lost their lives in the 1962, Sino-Indo conflict. Together on a truck they were cheered all the way in Mumbai as they sold chocolates to the public and collected money. The entire film industry participated in the event which was a resounding hit.

It was in 1967 finally that both paired in their most memorable film, Jewel Thief. For this home production of Navketan, Vijay Anand, wrote, directed and edited it brilliantly. The romantic scenes between both Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala were mature, intense and far ahead of their times. She confessed Dev Anand was the best romantic actor she worked with.
The start was poetic as after the song, Rula Ke Gaya Sapna, Dev Anand says, "Aur Jab Sabera Hoga, To Hasega Kaun?" To t
