U.S. REPRESENTATIVE

Up for reelection this year, the former Boston city councilor has proven she’s a force to be reckoned with from City Hall to Capitol Hill. Whether it’s taking on Big Tech, fighting for immigrants, supporting funds for homelessness and mental health, or cutting student debt, the social media wiz is regularly making headlines. As a progressive leader representing an increasingly progressive electorate, Pressley has the distinction of being both popular and having an impact on her constituents’ lives.

CHAIRMAN, EASTERN BANK

His bank has gone on a buying spree, scooping up, among others, Century Bank and a host of insurance companies. As a result, Rivers now sits atop a financial giant—and continues to get behind numerous forward-looking local and regional initiatives as well. That includes, most recently, support for offshore wind farm development. He may not throw his hat into the governor’s race this time around, but that doesn’t mean he never will.

CHAIRMAN AND CEO, SUFFOLK CONSTRUCTION

You know that story carbon-neutral building going up on the Boston University campus—the one that looks like a pile of unevenly stacked books? That’s the work of Fish’s company. So are the upcoming Gillette Stadium renovations, and the story Raffles Back Bay Hotel & Residences. It’s all part of the expansive reach of the construction mogul, who continues to grow his own profile as the chair of Boston’s Real Estate Roundtable.

PRESIDENT AND TRUSTEE, BARR FOUNDATION

There are few people in town who aren’t champing at the bit for a meeting with Canales. At the end of last year, which saw the Barr Foundation give away $ million of Amos and Barbara Hostetter’s $ billion fortune, Canales wrote that the organization’s trustees felt “called to redouble efforts to do the vital work ahead.” To that end, Canales has been taking notes from

Micho Russell (25 March – 19 February ) was an Irish musician and author best known for his expert tin whistle performance. He also played the simple-system flute and was a collector of traditional music and folklore.

    Biography

Russell was born in Doonagore, Doolin, County Clare, Ireland. Russell came from a musically renowned family, his mother played the concertina, and his father was a sean-nós singer. He had two brothers, Packie and Gussie, who were also musicians. He also had two sisters. He never married.

    Music

Russell taught himself to play the tin whistle by ear starting at age eleven. The s revival of Irish traditional music brought him attention and performance opportunities. In , Russell won the All-Ireland tin whistle competition, which further increased demand for his performances. Like Séamus Ennis, Russell was also known for his spoken introductions to tunes in his live performances, which incorporated folklore and legend. His knowledge of tradition extended past music to language, stories, dance, herbal lore, and old country cures.

    Death

Russell died in a car accident on 19 February on his way home from a gig just prior to going back into the studio to record another CD.

    Works

    Original music

"Micho Russell's Reel," his only known composition, is a variant of an older tune he called "Carthy's Reel." He told Charlie Piggott, "So Carthy was beyond anyway and he heard the old tune from a piper playing it and he had the first part but only three-quarters of the second part. So when Séamus Ennis came around collecting music, I put in the last bit. That's roughly the story of the tune." The reel has been recorded by other artists such as Mary Bergin. His best-known songs were John Phillip Holland and The Well of Spring Water.
