Karina Hoffman

Dustin's oldest child is Karina Hoffman, who was adopted by the actor when he tied the knot with Anne Byrne in 1969. Anne was best known for her appearances in films like Manhattan (1979) and Why Would I Lie? (1980).

Karina, now 58, was Anne's daughter from a previous marriage, but became a part of the Hoffman family when her mom remarried. While she has made several appearances with her dad at industry parties and on the red carpet, she remains the only one of his children to never enter show business in any form.

Karina has maintained a life away from the spotlight, particularly since her parents got divorced in 1980. Heavy reports that she was married to artist Simon Birkhead from 1992-1998 and they had one daughter, although this has not been confirmed.

Jenna Byrne Hoffman

Dustin welcomed daughter Jenna, his first biological child, with Anne in October 1970. She was the first to briefly dabble in acting, appearing in movies like The Wedding Singer (1997) and Wag the Dog (1998), the latter opposite her dad.

  • He is known as one of the greatest actors of all time — with countless accolades to his name — but Dustin Hoffman is first and foremost all about his family. The film icon is the doting dad of his six kids: Karina, Jenna, Jacob, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

The legendary actor has been married twice in his life. The first marriage came to actress Anne Byrne in 1969. They welcomed one child during their union. He and Anne had their only biological kid together, Jenna, in 1970. Dustin also adopted Anne’s eldest daughter, Karina, from a previous relationship. The pair parted ways, however, in 1980.

That same year, The Graduate star tied the knot again to businesswoman Lisa Gottsegen. They went on to have four kids of their own — Jacob, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali. Though his kids are all adults now, he reminisced on how he approached parenting in 2017, and how his own strained relationship with his father influenced how he raised his kids.

“You inherit certain things,” he told Time magazine. “My wife, we’ve been together 40 years, and she knew my parents. There were times when the kids were little and I would get upset, and she would say, ‘[Your father] Harry’s coming out.’ And she was right. I don’t think there’s a way around it. You spend a lifetime – I do anyway – trying to un-wreck yourself. Because you’ve been wrecked.”

To avoid putting  that pressure on his own children, Dustin “never encouraged”  his kids to “see his work.” “There were no posters on the wall,” he told Time. “I don’t have a kid who’s seen everything I’ve done. I don’t want to belabor them in that way.”

Today, the Oscar winner and his second wife remain happily married and she is still the rock in his life keeping him down to earth. “I say in Hollywood it is like dog years, so you have to multiply that by seven,” Lisa once joked exclusively to Closer about her union, adding that after decades, she and Dustin “are more in love” today and their affection for each other “continues to

Dustin Hoffman is a proud dad to six children: Karina, Jenna, Jake, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

Dustin and his first wife, ballerina-turned-actress Anne Byrne, married in 1969 and are parents to daughters Karina and Jenna. In 1978, the pair separated and Dustin went on to marry entrepreneur and longtime friend Lisa Hoffman, née Gottsegen. They welcomed four children together: Jake, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

In an interview with the Washington Post in 1979, Dustin talked about how he viewed parenting and himself as a father.

"I know that it's a fantasy, but I wish that I could be the kind of parent who is like the ideal director. That is, someone who guides you without your even knowing it, without imposing himself," he told the outlet, adding, "I know that I have certain characteristics that have been rather constant through the years. For example, I always try as hard as I can at what I'm doing."

Meanwhile, Jake, Dustin’s oldest son, has complimented The Graduate star's parenting. “I have a great dad; I've learned a lot from him," Jake told Todayin 2015 of their close relationship. “Both of my parents have been influences in my life.”

Here’s everything to know about Dustin Hoffman’s six children: Karina, Jenna, Jake, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

Karina Hoffman was born in March 1966 to Byrne and her first husband; Dustin adopted Karina after he married Byrne in 1969. According to Variety, Karina attended the U.N. International School in New York City.

Dustin spoke to the Washington Post in 1979 about being a dad and how his oldest liked to keep him up to date on the latest trends.

"I love it when Karina teaches me a bump and a grind, which is the latest dance,” he said at the time. “The first time it happened I

Look at the titles and roles for which Dustin Hoffman is best known, and you’ll see clear proof that the Los Angeles native is one of the most accomplished screen actors America has ever produced: The Graduate. Midnight Cowboy. Little Big Man. Kramer vs. Kramer. Rain Man. Papillon. Tootise. Lenny. All the President’s Men. Wag the Dog.

And then, of course there’s his television work including his role voicing Lisa’s cool, sensitive, thoughtful substitute teacher, Mr. Bergstrom, in one of the greatest episodes of The Simpsons

Here, LIFE.com offers photographs of Dustin Hoffman—most of which never ran in LIFE—made by John Dominis when the actor was just coming into his own as an artist and a star. (Many of the photos here feature Hoffman with his first wife, Anne Byrne, and her daughter from a previous marriage, Karina.)

At the time these pictures were made, Midnight Cowboy and The Graduate were behind him. Many of his greatest, defining roles were still ahead of him. But Hoffman admitted something to the magazine in the July 11, 1969, issue of LIFE in which a few of these pictures first appeared that today sounds a bit jarring:

“I don’t think at 50 you should be doing what you did when you were 30,” he said, referring to his own plans to become a director as soon as possible. “Acting, especially film acting, seems to me to be more of a female profession. The director, who has all the creative power, really uses the actor. I don’t know many actors who enjoy the work of acting. I like the adulation, the money, the whole gimmick of it, but I don’t think I’m a natural actor.”

Then, in a kind of wistful coda, the 31-year-old Hoffman admits, “I don’t see how people who have done 70 movies keep going.”

Before he’s through, the man who has inhabited some of the most distinctive characters in film history might look back
